Now that I have appealed to your sense of truth, I would like you since you are studying architecture, to develop a loathing for drawings. For drawing is nothing more than covering a piece of paper with engaging things like styles, ‘orders,’ fashions. Whereas architecture, which exists in space, in breadth, in depth, and in height, consists of volumes and traffic patterns. It is created in the mind. You must therefore learn to conceive it in your mind, with closed eyes; you will then know how it is going to turn out. The piece of paper only serves to express your idea so that you can transmit it to your client and your contractor. Everything depends on the plan and the section, you will have your facade; and if you have a certain feeling for harmonious relationships, your façade may well stir our emotions. Bear in mind that houses are made to be lived in. Well and good. But you will not be a good architect unless your facades are beautiful, and this is purely a matter of proportions. You will need a great deal of imagination to succeed here; the simpler the problem, the greater the need.
